ADDENDUM 3/2014: I have since both stopped in to grab and order AND sat for lunch. The order was just coming out of the oven when we arrived. This was a giant step for their service. My lunch was "just ok." The mashed potato pizza wasn't fresh (it was absolutely dead in there, so it had most likely been sitting) and went cold quickly. The beer on tap were not in par with those in town. All in all, a small step for this Otto. Without a bar, it just doesn't have the warmth of the rest of the Otto restaurants. The atmosphere is cold and stale. I'll check back again when the weather warms up to see if they will do anything creative with the outdoor space. FIRST REVIEW: I love Otto pizza; in fact, the Portland Otto locations get 5 stars from me (and I don't give 5 stars lightly). South Portland? Of course the pizza is the same amazing recipe, but the customer service at this location needs a makeover. I tried to order a pizza tonight - it was a very basic order - and the employee simply could not wrap her head around it. It got to the point that it was just impossible to have a conversation with her. It was painful. I had to have a friend call back and try to order again. This does not reflect on the number of stars, but this location, but unlike the other Portland locations, does not have a bar - something this area of South Portland desperately needs - just a chill pizza hangout with quality pizza and beer. I'll check back into this location periodically and update stars accordingly. They can only go up!

OTTO in South Portland was most likely intended to be a take out, delivery and "grab a slice" stop, but it is very popular in SoPo. I'm sure they were surprised at how busy they became so quickly. The food is consistently excellent! They now have more comfortable seats! Hooray! They got rid of the small benches and put in chairs! For people who have difficulty with ordering, as with any popular and busy place you need to order early to get the pizza when you want it. Otherwise you will be waiting... that's the nature of how popular places with good food are. I always get take out and expect between a 15-20 minute wait on weeknights and Friday and Saturday it could be a wait of 45-55 minutes or more. That's ok when you expect it to happen, you just order earlier! It's a great place, they support the community with fundraising nights - one night I went there when a local Middle School was having a benefit. Any business like OTTO deserves a visit! You won't forget the food! One down side, it doesn't have a bar so it is limited to some bottles of beer and some wines. No mixed drinks. So be prepared when you go for great pizza without a lot of extras!

A little hesitant to order given the bad reviews for this location, but we figured it had just opened so there were still some kinks to work out. Delivery times were apparently an issue for some, but they were right on the money for us, even during a snow storm. The butternut squash, ricotta, & cranberry pie was delicious. The squash and cranberries are sweet and the ricotta is creamy. The mashed potato, bacon, & scallion is very tasty as well. Not a lot of cheese, but you don't really need it with the buttery potatoes. We wanted the mango & pulled pork, but they were out of pork. Hoping to try that next time. Definitely will be ordering again. Free delivery is also nice. Don't let the previous reviews sway you too much. They seem to have gotten their act together.

Otto's pizza is delicious! I had the meatloaf pizza and I loved it! Super good. Their new South Portland location is very cool, very small, but really interesting. (Some people might not like the big communal bench seating. Not a problem for me.) Definitely worth a try when in the Portland area.

Ordered a cheese pizza for MY KIDS!!!!! from an incredibly snotty hostess who was acting like she was soooo busy( no one was there) and I was an inconvenience. Was surprised to feel how lite the boxes were and when I got home to the sleepover my kid was having we realized there wasn't ANY red sauce on our cheese pizza! The pictures others have posted of cheese pizza clearly include red sauce. It was COVERED in chopped basil. It was as if they were pissed and insulted that I wanted cheese only and wanted to rub it in that I must be a person of few means and no palette for good ingredients. I would like to see them try to get a bunch of 6 yr olds to eat what they gave me! We had to order dominos!! And as you can guess from the tone of my review they were NOT interested in satisfying me or even apologizing when I called to complain. I cannot say enough how much I despise their very existence and hate even driving by there! Horrible horrible people who were not doing me the grand favor they thought they were by allowing me to order a CHEESE PIZZA!!!!!

I have gotten pizza here 3 times since it opened in South Portland. The pizza is good, but I have to say that I hate paying $22.00 for an eggplant, basil, and ricotta pizza when the pizza only has 3 pieces of eggplant and a few leafs of basil on it. They skimp on the toppings big time. I'm tired of it, so I probably won't give them another chance.

For a day visit to Portland a co-worker steered me to Otto as a great option. I was not disappointed. Loved the re-use of the Filling Station- keeping the name on the building was cool. The vibe was great inside too. I could just imagine on a warmer day drawing up those gleaming garage doors and enjoying the breeze. I wa drooling over the menu and the topping combo's. We were only getting something a little light before going on a boat ride so was thrilled that one of the slices was the mashed potato/scallion/bacon delight. It did not disappoint. Very flavorful and not overpowering in any way. I may just make another day trip just to include a few of the resturants I could not go to- but, Otto's woudl stil be on the list. Oh...the possibilities. A neighboring table had the pulled pork and mango pizza (would have been one of my choices too!) and they were very happy with their choice. All good........

Ate lunch here today at there SoPo location. We split 2 of the 12 inch pizzas. We had the butternut squash, ricotta, and the other was a mushroom bacon onion. Both were outstanding!! Very creative, yet fundamental and delicious flavor pairings. Most pizzas seemed to have complimentary sweet and salty toppings. The ricotta and squash was my favorite of the 2. I definitely will return and try some others. The crust was cookes to perfection and was flatbread style, the way a pizza should be. Decor and ambience were ok and appropriate for the brand and image they go for. I look forward to coming back again

It's ok, it's not the best pizza I had but I would eat it and it still is pretty good. Lots of my friends hate it because it's not like normal pizza but it's not that bad but it's not amazing.

I have had take out from this branch of Otto many times because the pizza tastes good and it is close to my home. They have a tasty recipe, and when you finally get a pizza home it (usually) tastes great. But this Otto branch is one of the worst-run businesses I have ever dealt with. They are terrible at predicting when take-out pizzas will be ready, setting customers up for often long waits after they get there. They mess up the pizzas not infrequently, having to cook new ones (if they detect the problem-which they haven't always), further adding to one's wait. And they make a big show of inspecting each pizza with the customer before it goes out the door, as though this was some kind of brilliant public relations/marketing maneuver that makes customers feel good about their purchase, when in fact it: a) is an annoying further waste of the customer's time, b) cools their pizzas, and c) sends a message that they really don't know what the hell is in those boxes, and want to cover themselves in case it is wrong. No other pizza place does this, yet the vast majority manage to get the orders right. Why can't the South Portland Otto? By the way, the Portland-Munjoy Hill Otto has none of these problems and is well worth the trip.

We've ordered a few more times from OTTO SoPo recently, and they've delivered great pizza on-time each time. I can officially say that delivery is no longer a disaster! Nice job, OTTO. Now I just need to check out the in-restaurant dining experience and we can hopefully get some serious stars going on here!

I am giving my earlier review of the SoPo Otto a big revision, since they have installed a large heat unit in the dining room, making it possible to eat there. They kind of lucked out with the garage-industrial look they went for: meant they could slap in a very industrial piece of heat quickly and not affect the look at all. I think this location has a great look inside. Someone needs to go in there with a wide-angle lens and post some photos of the room. Recapitulating from the previous review: delivery (as noted by others here) can be hideously slow. With luck this will improve over time. But the pizza is great, and now you can eat it in Otto's new South Portland location!

How ironic. The still wet-behind-it's ears OTTO is housed in a former garage/gas station and serves pizza. I'm sure most patrons are unaware that not too long ago, there was another pizza place also housed in a former gas station that held court at the corner of Ocean St. and Broadway across from the park. That venerable place was none other than Angelone's and thank God there is still the original on Washington Ave in Portland. Another irony is that the name OTTO is a homonym for "auto". This was my first time and I know I will be back for seconds. I did enjoy the bacon, scallion and mashed potato pizza. But, I found it a tad too salty for my taste. The room is cozy but it would be nice if the heat was cranked up a little - especially for the seats next to the large windows. The staff fulfilled orders like a well-oiled machine (no pun intended). And the Black Friday crowd included lots of families given it's neighborhood location. In the summer, plan to save room for a trip to Red's Dairy Freeze afterwards.

We stopped in at OTTO on a cold night, expecting some delicious gourmet pizza... And we were not disappointed! We ordered the Mashed Potato pizza to share... It sounded different and interesting enough, but we weren't expecting it to be so incredible! Fresh mashed potatoes, a blend of white cheeses, thick, salty bacon, and tangy scallions made for an experience that we still crave months later. It was a little pricey, but not more than we were anticipating for gourmet pizza. The atmosphere was industrial and open (the restaurant seems to be a renovated auto-repair shop), and was chilly inside, (the staff was sure to apologize as they were experiencing heating issues), service was average, and it's probably not a great spot for kiddos. However, they do offer free delivery to the South Portland area, and I see their delivery cars out and about quite often! Overall, OTTO has definitely secured a spot on our list of favorite pizza places!

We are big Otto pizza fans. The new SoPo location is chaos. Too many orders and limited capacity to keep up. We had plans to eat in but only available were bar stools facing the wall -ugh. Decided to Oder to go, waited 65 minutes for 3 small pizzas. Tried to order a glass of red wine while waiting, server told me the wine was chilled for some strange reason. Huh? I think not. Arriving home, surprise, surprise..... 1 wrong pizza. Parking lot is down right dangerous. First and last visit to SoPo.

I was so pleased to realized that an OTTO had moving in just down the street from me! I have never been to the other locations but I've always heard great things and I was so excited to finally stop in for a bite! They have really brought out the charm of what once was a gas station, maintaining the garage feel in the decor. I went by around 11:30 on a Friday night hoping to get a few different slices, but unfortunately they stop serving slices at 4 (random time, huh?!) so I went ahead and ordered a sausage and onion pie to go. My pizza came out in less than 10 minutes and the service was very friendly. A twelve inch pie cost me twelve bucks, which isn't great, but still reasonable for the quality I think. The crust was thin and flavorful and the toppings were very tasty indeed! And best of all it was SEASONED, which is something most pizza joints fail at. My pie was dusted with delicious herbs! So pleased. I will say that the one down point was that it was a tad greasy, so between that and the lack of slices it's getting 4 stars rather than 5. But over all I'm thrilled that OTTO is now in SoPo and open so late into the evening! I'm sure I'll be back on a weekly basis!

This location was my first try of OTTO and it was very good. However there were some downfalls. The pizza was great, but it was way over-peppered, not too big a deal but it definitely took down the taste a bit. Another downfall was the wait time, we ordered a pizza at around 6 at night and the wait time was an hour and a half.I will give them the benefit of the doubt on that though, since it had just opened a few days prior, plus they gave us a pretty nice discount for the wait. The second time we had OTTO there it was about the same quality of pizza, pretty good, but not the best pizza I've ever had. The price isn't horrible but I feel for the amount of pizza you get it should be more fairly priced. The wait time the 2nd time was a lot shorter as well, this time it was only 35 minutes, not bad, but I can get a bit lower quality pizza for a way better price and only a 15 minute wait time at Dipietro's so I'm not too sure how many times we will choose OTTO but It wont be as often as I'd hoped considering how well I'd heard OTTO was. It was good, don't get me wrong, but there are better options in the South Portland and Portland area, but I would recommend OTTO for anyone who wants a good thin crust pizza with very good sauce as well. Overall OTTO was pretty good, and I will most likely go back several times, but it has a few slight downfalls.

Otto's is maddeningly inconsistent. After a run of good pizzas over the past two months, my pickup order today for a small sausage/vidalia had not much for toppings and the crust was burned (see the photo). The counter-person did offer me a free soda, but I was in a hurry and what I really wanted was a good pizza. Not only was the crust burned, but it tasted like cardboard, sort of like a mediocre frozen pizza from Hannaford's. In fact, my guess is that the dough was left over from the weekend and they just used it anyway. I may try again in a month or two, but for now, "Meh" seems like a gross overstatement. Update 8/19/15: Now I get it! They were really just trying out their new tortilla recipe and it wasn't a pie crust at all. Upwards and onwards Otto!!!

This place is so cute! It is an old garage turned into a pizzeria. I came here extremely hungover and this was just what I needed. We got a suasage and bean pie and it was SO good. Service was good and quick as well. Great stop during our trip to explore Maine!

Between the charming open air dining room and the mouth watering pizza this was one of the most memorable meals of my life. Pies were delicious but the service was atrocious. With barely 6 people in the whole store, it took almost two hours for us to eat. Had it not been for the quality of food, we'd never consider going again. As is, we'll probably just spend the extra drive and hit the one downtown instead.

Good pizza here. The chicken kale pesto could have used more chicken but the kale pesto was fab! Disclosure: I could eat pesto by the jar :) place is small but cute, staff was on point. Lots of pick up and delivery going on, limited seating, but it worked out fine. We'll be back.

This is one of two locations in the Portland/South Portland area. It's a couple stone throws from my folks and with the offer of single slices before 4pm, we decided one rainy day to give it a chance. Besides, Red's is literally across the street, so we knew dessert was a lock. This is a re-purposed gas station, so half the space is kitchen and half is seating. The garage bay doors open onto the parking lot/street as the pictures show you. For a "people watcher" like myself, that's a plus. We each tried a slice of cheese and one other. He had the pepperoni and I had the margherita slice. The size of the slices quickly taught us we should have shared the cheese slice. I chose not to try the pepperoni since I wasn't in a "meat" mood. My margherita was a whole other thing... This is in my top 3 slices...ever. Fresh ingredients make a meal and as an Italian, believe me when I say fresh basil makes a universe of difference. The tomato tasted fresh and not overly juicy. The oil tasted garlic flavoured. My mouth sang a joyous tune with each bite. When hubby tried it, he said he wished he'd ordered that instead of what he got. My only knock on this location, is size. They have certainly made the most of their space, but I like spacious eating. It only earns a .5 star deduction, but I've rounded down so there is room for them to wow me even more next visit.

Our group visited Otto- South Portland on a Saturday night. Lovely atmosphere, though I only realized it used to be a mechanical shop after reading other yelp reviews. Our group of five ordered three large pizzas and one small pizza--it was WAY too much food! Don't get me wrong; the pizzas were DELICIOUS (ranked in order below). Our group asked the server if we over-ordered and she assured us that it will be the right amount. While I understand the difficulty of estimating your customer's appetite, I would expect an honest opinion. We ended up bringing home an entire (large) pizza. For this reason, the restaurant is bumped down to 4 stars. 1) Mushroom, bacon and Vidalia onion (THUMBS UP) 2) Butternut squash, ricotta and cranberry (UNIQUE ) 3) Mashed potato, bacon and scallion (I recommend ordering a small, as the potato and crust makes it quite heavy) 4) Chicken and broccoli special ("special" was nothing too special)

My friend and I spotted this cute little place on our way to the Portland lighthouse. We thought it was adorable and wanted to check it out on our way back for dinner. Upon entering, we waited 10 minutes to be seated with no recognition from the wait staff. Once seated, it didn't appear to be that busy inside, although a couple of tables had just gotten up to leave. We waited (and I counted, having worked in many, many restaurants) for 15 minutes before anybody came to our table. No apology, no nothing. Like I said, it's not like they were busy. In fact, while we waited, the girls talked amongst themselves in the back. That is just simply unacceptable. We placed our order and waited. This was not the best pizza I've ever had, but it was decent- a little too greasy. We had to wait another several minutes for a server to acknowledge us to get our check and then we got out of there as soon as possible. I would never return to this specific establishment again based on service alone. Which is a shame, because the place is really cute inside and they do have some pretty eclectic pizza choices. Hire different servers or re-train the ones you currently have.

Otto's pizza has slowly begun to take over Portland. And while the storefronts different from place to place, they've got some great, original pizzas at a good price! This location is pretty small but it's got charm, it has two large garage doors that they open up when the weather's nice to let in fresh air [and if that's not enough they also have a lovely patio]. Start with a wine or beer, they've got a good selection [the Rioja Madre, from Spain, pairs well with pizza and only $22/bottle]. The Butternut Squash, Ricotta & Cranberry pizza is killer good! You can't go wrong with it, it's savory, sweet and you can throw on some red pepper flakes to make it spicy. The Kalamata Olive, Red Pepper, Garlic & Asiago and Mashed Potato, Bacon & Scallion are also really great options. Personally, I think this location is great for both groups or an intimate date spot. Plus, it's right around the corner from Red's Dairy Barn, so you've got dessert covered!

This is my favorite location of all the OTTO's. I love the building and anyone who knows me knows how much I love this pizza. I almost always get the spinach, white bean and garlic pizza - but - I substitute the garlic for mashed potato and it is HEAVEN. Family friendly, good drinks and amazing pizza. You can't go wrong.

Just had one of the worst pizzas I've had in a long time. I ordered take out. I arrived on time to find out that my pizza was not up to standard so they needed to remake it. Not a big deal. When I got home the pizza that they remade for me had a bottom that was covered with all kinds of burnt bits. Was like they burnt something in the oven and then cooked my pizza on it. Was really kind of gross.

This is a a review about the staff at cottage road. First I will say that Otto pizza is the best pizza I have ever had and I love their pizza more than anything. My family and I ate at the cottage road location last night (Sunday night) and were completely surprised by the young women working at this location. Very rude and inattentive. We had to get up and ask for drinks and napkins and plates. They were all just chatting with each other in the corner. We ordered 2 pizzas and only one came out. When we waited an additional 30 minutes for the second pizza we asked the girl where it was and she said she didn't know. We actually had to leave the restaurant without dinner because apparently she never put our pizza order in or they never made it. No answer was ever given to us. No apology or excuse. Kind of odd!

Incredibly noisy for such a small venue. The pizza took 40 minutes, the waitress did nothing to accommodate us. Bad choice for such a good pizza. Definitely go to Otto's on the East End in Portland. We ordered the white bean and spinach pizza and added pork. You would need a microscope to find the sliver of pork they added.

I'm a huge fan of Otto's pizza. It's not pizza that I would eat every day, but it is a great, crispy thin crust that you won't be able to replicate at home.. and some of the flavors are UH-MAH-ZING (potato, bacon and scallions? butternut squash, ricotta and cranberries?). When Otto's announced that they'd be opening a location across the bridge, I was ecstatic because it gave us more pizza options in our little area. The SoPo Otto's opened just before Thanksgiving and had many hiccups along the way (especially with delivery). Since it has been a good few months since then, we came back for a second dine-in visit. Unfortunately, I'm just not impressed with this location. Let's get the good out of the way first: 1. The décor is wonderful. They really kept the nostalgic mechanic's shop feel and look throughout the place. The heat was pumping against the bay doors, so it was comfortable. (I'm picturing the doors wide open in the summer to let a nice breeze in, lovely!) 2. The pizza, of course, is fabulous and the quality is identical to the Portland Ottos. . Now for the "meh" that earns this shop 3 stars for dine-in: 1. This is a Portland-sized restaurant in South Portland. For those who aren't from the area, that means it is TINY for a neighborhood that has plenty of people and not many sit down options. There are ~5 two-top tables, ~10 stools against a bar that faces the wall, and a family-dining table that seats ~12. All of these tables are practically on top of each other and don't afford much space for plates, drinks, and the pizza itself. 2. Every seat in the place is a short bar stool... which is probably extremely practical due to the space constraints and the mechanic shop feel, but it's not very comfortable when you're 7 months pregnant, bringing young children, or dining with your grandma. In the residential SoPo area, you're catering to these demographics, not single hipsters and college students; the seating and space should reflect the area clientele. At 5 months in, and as an expansion property, this place should be close to a well-oiled machine. One example: they don't have a fountain beverage machine, despite the menu advertising it. We were charged $.50 more for the pleasure of cans of soda that are not refillable (pace yourself, or you'll be out $5 for 2 drinks!) BOTTOM LINE: Order for pickup. The pizza is fantastic, but this place is the size of a slice bar in a neighborhood that needs more.

We read the reviews and after reading that Food Network voted the mashed potato, bacon, and scallion pizza the best in Maine, we decided to go for it. We are not disappointed. I'm actually chomping on a piece of mushroom, ricotta, and herb right now which, so far, is my favorite. The crust is light, thin and crispy. That's the way pizza should be. The topping is excellent and so flavorful. The mashed potato pizza is also delicious, as is the Caesar salad. We will for sure go back for more selections before driving out of SoPo.

Great thin crust pizza! Very attentive staff. A real find in South Portland. Two couples arrived at 8:30pm and enjoyed a great dinner with great service. We had the mashed potato pizza and loved it.

Great lunch at Otto yesterday. $9 lunch special included salad, a slice and beverage. Tomato salad was fresh and light. Mashed potato slice was delicious. Very good service. I'll be back!

This new location is great. They've done a really good job with the renovation and the gas/service station decor. I'm a big fan of the pulled pork and mango pizza, and they do a really decent gluten free crust. Easy parking, and just across the bridge from Portland, which makes it a nice alternative.

I had the Butternut squash pizza, contrary to my review it was actually pretty good. That said it took 45 minutes to get a luke warm pizza and an afterthought of a salad delivered 4 miles down the street for $40. The Caesar salad was in an extremely small to go container for $7. Did they run out of lettuce? Croutons were good but other than that it was a basic caesar salad. Where was the rest of it? Food was good but the quantity for $40 was slightly infuriating.

I had a pizza emergency and OTTO came to my rescue. I was planning on picking up my pie but a work situation came up so I called and asked if they could deliver instead. Within 10 minutes, a delivery with a smile greeted me at my front door. The pie was really good but the customer service was STELLAR!

After visiting Portland Head Light, my parents and I needed some grub before heading up to Moosehead Lake. We wanted something a notch above fast food, with seating, but not Iggy Azalea fancy. As usual, Yelp came to the rescue and we decided to try some pies at Otto. At first it was a bit confusing to get to, as it's located right at the fork in the road where Cottage Road and Highland Ave go their separate ways. Then there was the mix of restaurant interior and vintage gas station exterior; my mom, not used to such hipster antics, asked, "Are you SURE this is it?" Once we walked in and confirmed that it indeed was a pizza spot and not some ironic hipster gas station, we took our seats and got down to business. My parents ended up getting the lunch special which is a slice, salad and drink for $9. I found this to be a pretty good deal, as the portions were fair. However, I wish they could specify on paper which pizzas qualify for the deal, as the poor waitress had to repeat herself a few times since my parents couldn't remember everything that she said. I was interested in the Apple, bacon and red onion pizza, which unfortunately wasn't eligible as a lunch special slice, so I ended up buying a small pie. Luckily (or unluckily, for my waist, at least) Otto's pizzas are the thin crust type, so I didn't have much of an issue finishing it on my own. Although I did enjoy it, it wasn't as mindblowing as I thought it would be. The tomato sauce was good, and the bacon and red onion flavors were there, but I didn't think the apple added any more dimension or "wow" factor. Despite this slight disappointment, I think this is an awesome casual spot for a late lunch, as it isn't very busy and the wait isn't as bad. Looks like the mashed potato, bacon and scallion is the pie to try next time!
